HC Deb 21 February 1921 vol 138 cc598-9W
Sir T. BRAMSDON

asked the Home Secretary whether any and what provision has been made by his Department since the House last met to remove the block at the Home Office in dealing with applications for naturalisation with reasonable despatch; whether there are any and how many applications dating as far back as 1914 which await attention; and whether steps can be taken whereby applications for naturalisation from merchants of approved standing and unexceptional credentials desirous of establishing themselves in this country should not be expected to wait an indefinite period reaching to years before receiving attention?

Sir J. BAIRD

Applications for naturalisations are being dealt with as rapidly as is possible with the staff available. There are still a number of applications, dating as far back as 1914, awaiting attention, but it is not possible to give the exact number of such applications without prolonged search and inquiries, which would merely result in further delaying the disposal of outstanding applications. Delay can only be prevented by increasing the staff, which my right hon. Friend is not in a position to do.
