HC Deb 07 April 1921 vol 140 c474W
Mr. GILBERT

asked the Postmaster-General what are the rates paid by his Department to railway companies for the conveyance of letters, newspapers, and parcel post; whether the rates have been increased when railway rates were raised to ordinary traders; and, if so, by what amount?

Mr. PEASE

The remuneration of the railway companies for the conveyance of letters or postal packets other than parcels, is based on lump sum contracts entered into with the different companies. The rate paid for the conveyance of postal parcels is ll/20ths of the postage payable on rail borne parcels at the scale which was in force at the outbreak of War. So long as Government control lasts an addition of 100 per cent, is made to the remuneration payable under both heads.
