Mr. SWAN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) the number of persons who died during the years 1918, 1919, and 1920, leaving fortunes of £1,000,000 or over;

(2) the number of persons who died during the years 1918, 1919, and 1920, leaving fortunes between £500,000 and £1,000,000;

(3) the number of persons who died during the years 1918, 1919, and 1920, leaving fortunes between £100,000 and £500,000?

The number of estates in the various classes desired as obtained from affidavits, etc., presented for purposes of the Estate Duty in the past three financial years is as follows:—

NOTE.—The above figures do not represent the number of persons dying in the financial years quoted, but the number of cases in which affidavits were presented to the Department in these financial years. There is necessarily an interval between the death and the presentation of the affidavit.
