HC Deb 07 April 1921 vol 140 cc484-5W
Mr. SWAN

asked the Secretary for Mines if he is aware that the workmen engaged at the Barhaugh Estate, near Alston, Cumberland, coal mine or coal drift, have not been paid the advances agreed on by the Government to the coal miners for the March and October, 1920, settlements; and will he take the necessary steps to get the same dues paid?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I have investigated a complaint that the deputy and two men employed at this drift from September, 1919, to December, 1920, were not paid the advances referred to. In the case of the deputy I am informed that the engagement was on an upstanding wage, with an understanding that the terms would not be varied except by mutual agreement, but I have advised the manager that the advances should be paid.
