HC Deb 30 November 1920 vol 135 c1154W
Mr. RONALD McNEILL

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether the Glasgow education authority has granted the use of a room in the Town Head public school for purposes of recreation to the Glasgow Central Socialist Sunday school; and whether it is with the approval of the board that accommodation in schools supported by the rates and taxes should be granted to bodies teaching tenets with which a large number of taxpayers and ratepayers strongly disagree?

Mr. MUNRO

I am informed by the Glasgow education authority that on 7th October they granted the use of a room in Townhead public school, as stated, on payment of the usual charge of 6s. a night. On the same occasion they granted the use of a room on the same terms to other bodies, including the Glasgow Co-operative Society, the Women's Guild of the Cathedral of the Scottish Episcopal Church, and an evangelist for evangelistic services. These lettings of school premises out of school hours are, subject to the Common Law, within the competence of the education authority. No charge falls upon either the ratepayer or the taxpayer in consequence, and as regards the purposes for which the premises are granted, the authority are responsible to their constituents.
