HC Deb 29 November 1920 vol 135 c956W
Sir O. THOMAS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that, although it is not necessary to get a permit to export anhydrous ammonia from this country, the Customs authorities refuse to pass consignments because it is necessary to obtain the permission of His Majesty's Privy Council to export the cylinder, and the cylinder only, containing that commodity; and whether he will inquire into this anomaly?

Sir R. HORNE

The export of apparatus which can be used for the storage or projection of compressed or liquefied gases, flame, acids, or other destructive agents which can be of use in warlike operations, is prohibited except under licence, and if the prohibition were limited to empty containers it would obviously be less effective. Licences are, however, freely granted for the export ofbonâ fide consignments of gas cylinders, whether full or empty, for use for industrial purposes.
