§ Mr. CLYNESasked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that prior to the coming into operation of the Pensions (Increase) Act a large number of pensioned civil servants, whose pensions were not sufficient to maintain them, were also in receipt of old age pensions, that, with the increase provided in the Pensions (Increase) Act, the old age pensions of these people were either reduced or stopped altogether, with the result that the pensioners are no better off; and whether he will consider the advisability of introducing a Bill early in the next Session giving legislative effect to the recommendations of the recent Old Age Pensions Committee that the old age pension should be paid irrespective of the private means of the recipient?
§ Mr. BALDWINI am sending to my right hon. Friend a copy of a reply given on the 27th ultimo by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer to the hon. Member for West Bromwich (Mr. F. Roberts), in the course of which it was explained that the Government were not prepared to amend the Old Age Pensions Act, which was passed so recently as the 23rd December, 1919.
