asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland under what circumstances Mr. Smith, Inspector-General of the Royal Irish Constabulary, recently resigned; and whether any representations were made by him to any member of the Irish Executive or to General Macready as to the effects of reprisals on the discipline and moral of the Royal Irish Constabulary, or whether in any other respect he was at variance with the present administration?

This officer, who had completed 38 years of honourable and distinguished service, retired under the regulations in the ordinary course, and has been awarded full pension.
