HC Deb 23 November 1920 vol 135 c256W
Major BARNES

asked the President of the Board of Trade if the Government intended to continue in the business of import merchants for wool, wheat, sugar, and bacon, after the 31st December, 1920; and, if so, what advantage accrues to the inhabitants of this country by their so doing over and above what would accrue if this trade reverted to private hands?

Mr. McCURDY

I have been asked to reply. I am informed that no purchases of wool have been made since those prior to 1st July last, which marked the close of contracts made during the War with the Dominions of Australia and New Zealand. The extent to which Government purchases of wheat, sugar and bacon will be necessary after the 31st December, 1920, is now under consideration. The second half of the question raises a general issue which cannot conveniently be dealt with by way of question and answer.
