HC Deb 22 November 1920 vol 135 c58W
Sir O. THOMAS

asked the Secretary of State for War how many transport officers and men were stationed at Holyhead in 1915, and what number now; what is the duty of the present staff, and what does it cost; and what number of troops passed through Holyhead in 1–915 and 1920, respectively?

Mr. CHURCHILL

One transport officer was stationed at Holyhead in 1915, and at present there are four officers and seven other ranks. The duties of the present staff involve the maintenance of discipline among troops and assistance to the railway authorities; they are also responsible for carrying out orders regarding the non-carriage of rifles by small parties of troops and individual soldiers. A great deal of this duty is carried out at night. The present cost is approximately£382 per month. I cannot state the number of troops that passed through Holyhead during 1915, but the number during the present year is approximately 10,300 per month.
