§ Mr. INSKIPasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, under the proposed constitution of Malta, the Government of Malta will have any power of conferring privileges on a particular church or denomination which are not enjoyed by other Christian churches or denominations, or to subject the clergy or agents of any religious body to restrictions which are not of general application?
§ Lieut.-Colonel AMERYClause 56 of the Draft Constitution for Malta provides that all persons inhabiting the Colony shall have full liberty of conscience and the free exercise of their respective modes of religious worship, and that no person shall be subjected to any disability or excluded from holding any office by reason of his religious profession. Subject to this proviso the people of Malta will be entirely self-governing in matters of religion and will not be precluded from giving special recognition in education or otherwise to the religion of the overwhelming majority of the population.
