HC Deb 05 May 1920 vol 128 cc2087-8W
Mr. CLOUGH

asked the Minister of Health if his attention has been called to the alleged growth of the consumption of deleterious compounds, such as methylated spirits, among people affected by the high price and scarcity of ordinary stimulants; whether his Department has any information on the subject; and what steps it is taking in the matter?

Dr. ADDISON

No evidence has been brought to my notice of the growth of the practice referred to, nor have I any special information on the subject. The cause suggested by the hon. Member is not a matter within my jurisdiction.

Mr. CLOUGH

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has considered the possibility of people consuming deleterious substances owing to the high price and scarcity of ordinary stimulants; and whether he will reconsider the new taxation from the point of view of the public health?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I do not share the apprehension entertained by my hon. Friend.
