HC Deb 04 May 1920 vol 128 cc1918-9W
Mr. ALFRED DAVIES

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that full use is not being made of the wireless system so far as point-to-point working between Stonehaven and the Continent is concerned; whether point-to-point working has proved to be a valuable wireless outlet for commercial traffic; and whether, in these circumstances, he will issue instructions that this form of wireless service shall be properly organised and given a wider publicity in order that cable delay may be avoided and the commercial relations between this country and the Continent improved?

Mr. ILLINGWORTH

I am aware that full use is not being made of the facilities offered for wireless communication between Stonehaven and the Scandinavian countries. The traffic has in fact decreased, owing probably to the improvement in the cable service since the wireless service was instituted. The working of the Scandinavian stations is not altogether satisfactory, and I am in correspondence on the subject with the administrations concerned. Improved apparatus is also about to be installed at Stonehaven. As soon as the working contions are on a more stable basis, I propose to take steps to make the service better known.
