HC Deb 04 May 1920 vol 128 c1905W
Mr. WATERSON

asked the Prime Minister whether the disposition of mandates is in the hands of the Allies or of the League of Nations?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The allocation of mandates under the Treaty of Versailles was decided upon by the Supreme Council at Paris last summer. The allocation of mandates under the Turkish Treaty has also been decided by the Supreme Council as I announced in the House on 29th April. It does not fall to the League of Nations to decide which mandate shall be exercised by which Power, but I would draw the attention of the hon. Member to Article 22 of the Covenant which defines the extent to which the mandates will be exercised under responsibility to the League of Nations.
