HC Deb 03 May 1920 vol 128 cc1726-7W
Mr. JELLETT

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland how many officials of the High Court of Justice in Ireland appointed to offices during the past five years were required to sign undertakings not to claim the salaries attached to the positions to which they had been appointed during the duration of the War; and whether the Government can now make arrangements to have the officials who gave such undertakings put into the receipt of the salaries to which they are entitled as and from the date of their respective appointments or state when they will be put into receipt of such salaries?

Mr. HENRY

Owing to the diminution of legal work during the War, it was arranged that certain offices in the High Court should be left vacant, and that in other cases the duties should be carried out at a reduced salary, or by an existing officer without extra remuneration. As far as can be traced, there have been two cases of the latter kind—a Master of the King's Bench Division, and an Assistant Registrar in the Chancery Division. The salary of the first officer was restored to the normal figure as from the 1st April, 1920, and the second case is now under consideration.
