HC Deb 03 May 1920 vol 128 c1717W
Mr. LUNN

asked the Prime Minister what is the number and tonnage of ships of the former enemy States, other than ships of war, seized by the British or handed over under the Peace Treaty; whether these ships are now the property of the nation or have been disposed of; what is the amount realised by such disposals; and to what account the receipts have been placed?

Colonel WILSON

I have been asked to reply. Excluding ships which were captured and condemned as prize, the number of ex-enemy merchant ships which were detained in British ports or which were allocated to Great Britain for temporary management since the Armistice is 348 of 1,586,087 tons gross. The final ownership of these vessels has not yet been determined, and they have not been disposed of. If my hon. Friend wishes full particulars of the prize ships, I will have these got out, and they shall be sent to him.
