HC Deb 29 March 1920 vol 127 cc919-20W
Brigadier-General SURTEES

asked the Home Secretary, in view of the reported smuggling of undesirable aliens into this country, if his attention has been called to the growth of this element here and that many of these people come via the United States by means of false passports; and what steps the police are taking to stop this growing evil?

Mr. SHORTT

As I stated in answer to a series of questions from the 26th February to the 4th March, I am well aware of the attempts which have been made in the past few months by certain classes of aliens to obtain illicit admission to this country: but I do not think that the suggestion in the question as to false passports is well-founded. I am not aware that there are any grounds for the statement that this is a growing evil. In addition to the vigilant administration by the Immigration Officers at the ports of the Regulations as to the landing of aliens, the police are on the alert to detect the presence, in this country of any alien who has obtained admission in any irregular way, and take all necessary proceedings for the purpose of enforcing the law.
