§ Mr. WASON asked the Secretary for Scotland if he is aware that the Norwegian whalers R ho have been driven from Norway for destroying the fisheries there settled in Shetland and continued their operations there; if the important British herring fishing in these waters has since been completely destroyed; if, as the result of great agitation and unrest among the British fishermen, he appointed a commission of inquiry, who reported to him in December last year that whale-hunting in Shetland should cease; is he aware that whale-hunting is again going on in Shetland; if any steps are being taken to carry 51W out the recommendations of his own Commission; and if he is aware that there exists a very widespread feeling that undue influence seems to be brought to bear in high quarters by the aliens who control these operations?
§ Mr. MUNRO: I am aware that whaling stations were established in Shetland by Norwegian and British companies in the years 1903 and 1904, but I am not in a position to say whether my hon. Friend's reference to events in Norway are correct in all respect. With regard to the second and third parts of the question, I refer to the reply which I gave to my hon. Friend on the 3rd March. The reply to the fourth part of the question is in the affirmative. The Committee's recommendations are under my consideration. The reply to the last part of the question is in the negative.
