HC Deb 30 April 1920 vol 128 c1592W
Mr. BRIGGS

asked the hon. Member for Cheltenham, as Chairman of the Kitchen and Refreshment Rooms Committee, if, seeing that the advance of 50 per cent. in the charges for cigars is a clear case of profiteering, he can arrange to reduce these charges?

Sir J. AGG-GARDNER

To meet thead valorem duty of 50 per cent. on Havana cigars, the Kitchen Committee have increased the sale price by 25 per cent.—not 50 per cent. as stated in the question. The extra profit so obtained will go towards a sinking fund for the renewal of stocks.
