Mr. J. D. HOPEasked the Minister of Food what was the total amount of sugar of all kinds used during 1919 in the manufacture of beer; and what is the estimated consumption in 1920 for the same purpose?
§ Mr. McCURDYI have no exact record of the quantity of sugar used for brewing in 1919, as sugar of this quality, which is unfit for grocery or manufacturing purposes, is not imported or controlled by the Royal Commission on the Sugar Supply. It is, however, estimated that approximately 50,855 tons of such sugar were used for brewing during 1919, and that the amount required during the present year will be approximately 60,000 tons.
