HC Deb 28 April 1920 vol 128 c1254W
Lieut.-Colonel MALONE

asked the Minister of Health whether, in the event of the housing loan campaign failing to raise adequate funds for the construction of houses, especially in the poorer quarters where new houses are in greater demand, he will revise and re-organise the present methods of endeavouring to produce houses, and introduce proposals on a national basis similar to the coordinated effort made in regard to munitions during the War, and which was so successful in the mass production of shells?

Dr. ADDISON

If a vigorous campaign is carried out by the local authorities I hope that generally they will be able to raise the money required for their housing schemes. It would not be practicable to undertake the carrying out of local housing schemes throughout the country through the agency of a central department except in the larger centres of population. The hon. Member should remember that there are more than 1,800 local authorities with all manner of varying needs.
