§ Mr. LYNNasked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he is aware that the illicit distillation of alcohol is on the increase in Ireland; whether he is aware that in many cases where raids have been made by the police large quantities of sugar have been found; and whether, in view of the increasing difficulty the poor are experiencing in procuring sugar for food, he will say what steps he proposes to take in order to end the present condition of affairs?
§ Mr. MACPHERSONI understand there has been a considerable increase in illicit distillation in Ireland during the past year or two, but in only a few cases have the police seized sugar which was evidently intended for illegal use. As regards the supply of sugar for the poor, this is a matter for the Food Controller.
