Mr. KENNEDY JONESasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the cost of the permanent and temporary Civil Service for the week ending 15th October as compared with the week ending 5th April?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINThe weekly cost of the staff at the beginning of April was approximately £1,425,000 and at the beginning of October approximately £1,402,000. During the interval considerable reductions were made by most Departments, but these have been almost entirely counterbalanced by the increases in the Post Office necessitated by the resumption of their normal services and in the Pensions: Ministry. Minor additions have been made to the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise staffs.
