§ Captain LOSEBYasked the Minister of Health if his attention has been called to the possibility of easing the housing position by a process of converting large houses into two or three maisonettes; and if he will consider the advisability of extending the building subsidy to such enterprises?
§ Dr. ADDISONI have already called the attention of local authorities to the possibility of increasing the available housing accommodation by converting large houses into flats, and a manual giving information and advice on methods of conversion was issued by my Department some time ago. The recent Housing Act also contains a provision for facilitating conversions of this kind. A considerable number of conversions are being undertaken at the present time as part of local authorities' housing schemes. I do not think that the proposed subsidy should be extended to proposals of this kind.
