HC Deb 26 November 1919 vol 121 c1824W
CAPTAIN FOXCROFT

asked the Minister of Health whether his attention has been drawn to two types of timber-frame houses, with asbestos covers costing, respectively, £430 and £525, and now being erected by the Aircraft Manufacturing Company; whether either or both of these types fulfil reasonable requirements with regard to number and size of rooms and general sanitation; and whether His Majesty's Government would be prepared to encourage the erection of similar houses in large numbers by means of the proposed Government subsidy, provided that credible evidence is forthcoming as to their durability?

Dr. ADDISON

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to Command Paper 426, from page 4 of which he will see that the Aircraft Manufacturing Company's timber-framed bungalow is one of the methods of construction which have been approved by my Department. Local authorities can, therefore, enter into contracts for erection of houses of this type as part of their housing schemes, and subject to such conditions as the House may decide to impose, private builders erecting such houses would be entitled to a subsidy under the proposed new arrangements.
