SIR EVAN JONES

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the ascertained average profit per ton on the working of the coal mines for the quarters ended 31st December, 1918, and 31st March, 1919, respectively, after allowing for interest on loan and debenture capital and payment of royalties, and, in the latter quarter, for payment of the Sankey wage?

For the quarter ended 31st December, 1918, the profit was about 3s. 1d. per ton of coal raised, after allowing for interest on loans and debenture capital and payment of royalties. The final figures of the March quarter are not yet available, but the profit shown by the returns so far received is about 7½12. per ton of coal raised, after allowing for interest on loans and debenture capital and payment of royalties and the Sankey wage.
