HC Deb 18 November 1919 vol 121 cc379-80W
Mr. SITCH

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of dissatisfaction and resentment among persons accustomed to private brewing in small quantities for their own domestic consumption who, as occupiers of houses bearing low annual values are called upon, under the Finance Act of 1919, to pay heavily increased duties for licence to continue the practice; the reason for such increase; and can he see his way to effect a reduction in the same?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I would refer the hon. Member to my Budget statement on the 30th April last, in which the reason for the increase in the duty on certain private brewers' licences was fully explained. As regards the concluding portion of the question, I regret that I am unable to hold out any hope of a reduction in the duty.
