HC Deb 11 November 1919 vol 121 cc265-6W
Mr. W. SHAW

asked the Secretary for Scotland if Herr Ludwig Becker, the German professor of astronomy at Glasgow University, has been absent from his duties for four years; if he is still in receipt of his full salary from the public funds; and whether it is at present possible for students of Glasgow University to obtain instruction in astronomy?

Mr. MUNRO

Professor Becker has been absent from his duties since March, 1916, but arrangements were made and are still in force whereby the university lecturer in astronomy and a temporary lecturer provide instruction for students. I understand that Professor Becker has been in receipt of his full salary since his departure from the Observatory. The question of the professor's position is at present the subject of correspondence with the university authorities.
