HC Deb 11 November 1919 vol 121 c245W
Mr. STANTON

asked the Prime Minister if he will consider the advisability of arranging that a sum of money should be advanced to municipal authorities for the special purpose of employing discharged and demobilised sailors and soldiers upon public work of a useful nature, such as road repairing, housing, etc., so that these men should get a living wage for work done, instead of doles not sufficient to live upon, as at present?

Mr. BONAR LAW

As the hon. Member is no doubt aware, very substantial Government Grants are already available in connection with road repairing and housing, and the work requiring to be done is believed to be sufficient to employ those who are capable of undertaking such work. It is hoped that in this way the discharged and demobilised soldiers will find opportunity for employment, and that the trades concerned will facilitate their getting it.
