HC Deb 04 November 1919 vol 120 cc1344-5W
Sir J. HOPE

asked the Secretary for Scotland when lie proposes to appoint the Committee to inquire into the question of heather burning and game damage?

Mr. MUNRO

I am in course of constituting the Committee referred to, and I have received the consent of various Gentlemen to serve. I hope to be able to announce the names, within the next few days.

Sir J. D. REES

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he is aware that under existing Regulations heather is being burnt wholesale and without regard to date or method, so that young birds are burnt upon their nests and have no asylum in neighbouring un burnt strips or patches; and whether, in view of the value of the grouse as a food and as a revenue producer in Scotland, he will investigate this subject in view to the establishment of such compromise as may be fair to the grouse and to the farmer?

Mr. MUNRO

I am not aware of any such wholesale burning as the terms of the question suggest; but I am appointing a Committee to consider the question of heather burning with reference to the existing Regulations.
