§ Mr. GEORGE BALFOURasked the Secretary to the Treasury whether the established staff of His Majesty's Stationery Office have forwarded to the Treasury a protest in regard to the appointment to the Deputy-Controller-ship of that Department of a gentleman who has not previously been a Civil servant, who has had less than six weeks' temporary service in the Department, and who is stated to have no special knowledge, either technical or administrative, of the office; whether the staff of the Department have called for the cancellation of the appointment and the immediate establishment of an office committee representing all grades, so that the interests of the staff and of the public service may be safeguarded; and whether any and, if so, what reply has been given in answer to their representations?
