HC Deb 04 March 1919 vol 113 cc240-1W
Mr. LORT-WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the fact that the period of service of a discharged man is determined by events over which, generally, he has no control, he will advise that the war gratuity shall be assessed as from the date of enlistment to the date of the Armistice, and that every discharged man shall be granted the first £5 at least?

Mr. CHURCHILL

No, Sir; all these considerations were fully taken into account by the War Cabinet before the scale of gratuities was approved, and I am not prepared to reopen the question.

Mr. LORT-WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that the war gratuity granted by the Government compares very unfavourably with those granted by the Dominion Governments and by the Government of the United States of America; and whether it is proposed to increase the Grant?

Mr. CHURCHILL

It is not proposed to increase the Grant in question.
