§ Mr. HASLAMasked the Attorney-General whether, seeing that mortgage interest on house property may now be raised to 5 per cent., steps will be taken to enable rents to be raised to meet any increased charge for interest so caused?
§ Sir G. HEWARTThe permissible increase of mortgage interest under the Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restriction) Act is limited to ½ per cent, per annum, the rate when so increased not to exceed 5 per cent., and this increase is practically met by the provision allowing an increase of 10 per cent, on the standard rent.
