HC Deb 04 June 1919 vol 116 cc2032-3W
Brigadier-General WIGAN

asked the Secretary of State for War whether there are a large number of married quarters fit for habitation at present unoccupied; and if he will consider the possible early re-occupation of these quarters by those entitled to such accommodation with a view to relieving the inconvenience caused by the present dearth of domiciles, and of saving the cost' of the lodging allowances now being charged against the public?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. During the War the pressure on accommodation led to a number of married quarters being used for purposes other than that for which they were originally built, for example, to accommodate single officers, men or members of Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps. These quarters are now in process of being readapted to their former use, and while the necessary engineer services are being carried out, some are necessarily empty. It is anticipated that in a short time all married quarters will be reoccupied by married personnel of the Army.
