HC Deb 04 June 1919 vol 116 cc2042-3W
Major PRESCOTT

asked the Home Secretary whether the Army lorries placed at the disposal of the London General Omnibus Company for the relief of London suburban traffic are to be confined to the existing omnibus routes of South London; whether he will place an adequate number of these vehicles at the disposal of local authorities, under Government control, to carry pedestrian traffic in North London on new and existing routes for nonstop journeys as an emergency measure; and whether the Government is prepared to take temporary control of all tramway and omnibus traffic within the Metropolitan police area with a view to improved distribution so as to lessen the present highly dangerous congestion?

Sir A. GEDDES

I have been asked to answer this question. The intention is that the lorries shall be run where they will be most useful to the public, and if local authorities in the London district desire to purchase or hire lorries and can show that they have the necessary trained staff and garage equipment and can run the lorries to the public advantage, I shall be happy to see if I can assist them in the matter. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative.
