He entered the Army as a private on the 14th October, 1865. He was promoted warrant officer 1st July, 1881, and transferred to the Royal Marines on the 11th February, 1897.

Enlisted in the Army as a private on the 28th January, 1880. Transferred from Army 26th November, 1897, for service in R.M.L.I, as a band sergeant. Appointed bandmaster, Royal Marines, 1st April, 1900.
