§ Major WARINGasked the Home Secretary whether the fees for registration form part of the salaries of assistant-overseers and the payment to the registration officers for the preparation of the second register (15th March, 1919) has not yet been made; and whether, if this is due to the fact that the work of registration in a county area is too great for one man, each urban division can have 1636W its own registration officer, as these officials cannot afford to live out of their money?
§ Dr. ADDISONAssistant-overseers are paid in the first instance by the registration officers for their work in connection with registration, according to a scale prescribed by the Treasury. I should suppose that the cases are exceptional in which assistant-overseers have not yet been paid for their work in connection with the second register, which came into force on the 15th March last. The course which my hon. Friend suggests could not be taken without an alteration of the Representation of the People Act.
