HC Deb 27 February 1919 vol 112 cc1977-8W
Sir SAMUEL ROBERTS

asked the Secretary of State for War what is the total estimate for the work now being carried on at Cippenham, and how such estimate compares with that given in evidence before the National Expenditure Committee, allowing for the part of the work not now being proceeded with?

Captain GUEST

The revised Estimate of £1,750,000 was reported to the National Expenditure Committee last autumn, and at that time certain reductions were contemplated, which later matured in the omission of three large store sheds and a few roads. The net saving on this account would amount to some £136,000. On the other hand, certain expenditure has been incurred on lorry parks and roads to accommodate vehicles from Kempton Park, on temporary workshops, and on a railway extension and platform for the workmen totalling about £51,000. If it is decided to modify the barrack accommodation to suit a civil administration, there will be an additional saving which cannot at present be estimated. Subject, therefore, to the above, which will be taken into account in a general review of the financial aspect of this service, now in hand, and to market fluctuations, the estimated cost stands at approximately £1,665,000.
