HC Deb 27 February 1919 vol 112 c1993W
Mr. LUNN

asked the President of the Board of Education whether, in view of the demand on the part of teachers for an increase in their salaries to meet the high cost of living and the inability of local education authorities to meet these demands, he will favourably consider the possibility of the three-fifths Grant made by the Government being increased to four-fifths?

Mr. FISHER

I do not feel justified in asking the Chancellor of the Exchequer to consider so substantial a modification of the formula on which Grants in aid of elementary education are calculated. As regards specially necessitous areas, I would refer the hon. Member to Article 6 of the Draft Regulations for the substantive Grant for elementary education, of which I am sending him a copy.
