HC Deb 12 December 1919 vol 122 cc1785-6W
Major-General Sir J. DAVIDSON

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he has ascertained what would be the approximate increased annual cost to bring the pensions of pre-war pensioners of the Army, Navy, Police, and Civil Services up to the scale of post-war pensioners; and, if so, will he state the approximate sum involved?

Mr. BALDWIN

The cost of increasing the pensions of pre-war pensioners to the scale of post-war pensioners would be approximately as follows for the first year:

£
Army 1,500,000
Navy 945,000
Police 2,000,000
Civil Service 700,000
These amounts would be reduced in subsequent years by the lapses arising through deaths. My hon. and gallant Friend will realise that it has only been possible to prepare a very rough estimate of the cost.
