HC Deb 11 December 1919 vol 122 cc1641-2W
Mr. CHADWICK

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether a statement can now be made as to the policy of the Government in respect of the recommendations of the Old Age Pensions Committee?

Mr. BALDWIN

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on this subject by my right hon. Friend the Leader of the House on Monday last.

Lieut.-Colonel ALLEN

asked the Prime Minister if, pending the decision of the Cabinet on old age pensions, he will cause to be introduced a short Bill increasing all old age pensions by 5s. each weekly, or such sum as may be determined, for one month only, beginning 20th December, 1919, and ending 20th January, 1920, or until such time as the Government's proposals are ready?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I cannot add anything to the reply given to questions on this subject on 8th December.

Mr. FINNEY

asked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been called to a resolution, passed at a meeting of the guardians of the Wolstanton and Burslem Union, Stoke-on-Trent, expressing alarm, at the unsympathetic attitude of the Government towards our old age pensioners who, with the increased cost of living, are suffering great hardships, and find the allowance of 7s. 6d. weekly inadequate to meet the standard of living, and requesting that the old age pension be substantially increased; and whether he can indicate the Government's intentions respecting the same?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I cannot add anything to the reply given to questions on this subject on 8th December.
