asked the Ministry of Transport what is now the number of the staff employed by the Ministry of Transport; how many of them were formerly employed by railway and canal companies, by local authorities, motor manufacturers, engineering firms, and road transport contractors; how many possess technical knowledge of the internal combustion engine; and what are the names and duties of such members of the staff as are receiving a salary of £1,000 or more per annum?

The total staff employed by the Ministry of Transport is 449 at the present date. Of this number fifty-five were previously employed by railway companies, fourteen by local authorities, thirteen by engineering firms. No officers so far as shown by the records of the Ministry were previously employed by canal companies, by road transport contractors or by motor car manufacturers. In the Departments of the Ministry which are concerned, directly or indirectly, with the internal combustion engine, twenty-five officers are employed who have a technical knowledge of that engine.

The following are the names and duties of each member of the staff (other than the Minister and Parliamentary Secretary), who receive a salary of £1,000 per annum and upwards, exclusive of war bonus:
