HC Deb 04 December 1919 vol 122 cc604-5W
Mr. STANTON

asked the Minister of Food why people are still charged 2s. 7½d. for a small rabbit which formerly cost 10d. and 1s. before the War; and will his Department make inquiries into and deal with this matter, seeing that many poor people depend upon this form of food and cannot at present rates avail themselves of it?

Mr. ROBERTS

The maximum price of wild rabbits to the consumer is at present 9½d. per lb. In many areas the prevalent price is between 6d. and 8d. per lb., while in a few cases authority has been given for the raising of the price to 10d., in order to cover cost of transport from external sources of supply. I should be obliged if the hon. Member would furnish me with the particulars of the case in which a charge of 2s. 7½d. was made for a small rabbit, in order that proceedings may be taken if necessary. I would like to add that a large supply of frozen imported rabbits is now available and is being sold at the rate of 6d. per lb.
