Lieut.-Colonel MALONEasked the Secretary of State for War whether General Sir Hubert Gough, when in charge of the British Mission at Helsingfors returned to England and reported in favour of non-intervention in Russia; whether he was retained in England and relieved of his post; and, if so, whether his expression of feeling in regard to our Rusian policy had any relation to his removal from the British mission at Helsingfors?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLThe answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. General Gough came to England to report on the situation in the Baltic States. He did not return to the Baltic States, as the Supreme Council in Paris decided that the principal functions of the British Military Mission would in future be exercised by an Inter-Allied Commission under a French general officer. Consequently the British Military Mission was reconstituted and the services of General Gough were no longer required. No expression of feeling by General Gough with regard to our Russian policy had anything to do with his ceasing to be employed in the Baltic States.
