Major BARNESasked the Attorney-General for Ireland whether he is aware that the police prohibited the Monaghan County Council from receiving a deputation from an unofficial Commission of Inquiry into the resources and industries of Ireland; and whether this step was taken by the police on their own initiative or by direction of the military, and under what Statute?
Mr. HENRYThe Monaghan County Council had arranged to receive on 24th ultimo a deputation from the Commission of Inquiry into the industrial resources of Ireland, appointed by Dail Eireann, the so-called Parliament of Ireland. But as this body was suppressed by Proclamation under the Criminal Law and Procedure Act on 10th September, the police were directed to warn the parties concerned that the proposed reception of the deputation would be 611W illegal. It was accordingly abandoned, but the council meeting was adjourned as a protest against interference with their liberty.
