Colonel NEWMANasked the Minister of Health (1) whether he is aware that 62W where landlords have increased the rents of dwelling-houses, although such houses may come within the Increase of Rents (Restriction) Acts limit, the overseers are increasing the assessment on such houses; whether, having regard to the definition of gross estimated rental contained in Section 15 of the Union Assessment Committee Act, 1862, such increase is permissible; and what action does he propose to take;
(2) whether he is aware that parish overseers are increasing the assessments of houses to which the Increase of Rent (Restriction) Acts of 1915 and 1919 apply beyond the gross and rateable values ascertained from and based upon the standard rent as defined by those Acts; and what action does he propose to take?
§ Dr. ADDISONI have no information that assessments generally are being increased. The interpretation of Section 15 of the Act of 1862, in relation to the position created by the Increase of Rent (Restriction) Acts, is a matter for the Courts, and I have no authority to decide the question.
