HC Deb 02 April 1919 vol 114 cc1210-1W
Mr. GOULD

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the present unfinished state of the Government shipyards at Chepstow, it is the Government's intention to proceed with their completion; if he can state the total sum expended on these yards to date; if any vessels have been finished in the new yards; and if he will appoint a Commission of business men to investigate the whole matter?

Colonel L. WILSON

I have been asked to reply. As regards the first two parts of the question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the replies which I gave to the hon. Members for Preston and Salop on the 25th of February. No vessels have yet been completed in the new yards. As regards the last part, my right hon. Friend the Shipping Controller has recently been engaged in a thorough investigation of the whole position and he does not consider that any useful purpose would be served at the present time by the appointment of a Commission as suggested.
