HC Deb 04 November 1918 vol 110 cc1801-2W
Captain BLAIR

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the quantity, in proof gallons, of home-made spirit distilled in patent-still distilleries in England, Scotland, and Ireland, respectively, between 1st April, 1917, and 31st March, 1918, and between 1st April, 1918, and 30th September, 1918; and how much of this quantity is now remaining in warehouse?

Mr. BONAR LAW

In the period 1st April, 1918, to 30th September, 1918, the quantity of spirits distilled in patent-still distilleries was:

Proof gallons.
England 1,783,000
Scotland 6,717,000
Ireland 5,722,000
14,222,000
Some pot-still distilleries were at work between the 1st April, 1917, and the 1st April, 1918, and, as particulars of the quantity of home-made spirits distilled in patent-still distilleries are not shown separately in the official records, it is not possible to state the quantity of this spirit distilled in the period 1st April, 1917, to 31st March, 1918, or the quantity distilled between 1st April, 1917, and 30th September, 1918, and still remaining in warehouse.
