HC Deb 04 November 1918 vol 110 c1815W
Mr. ROWNTREE

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether he will grant a Return of the names and addresses of the returning officers for each Parliamentary constituency and the salaries of each officer; and will he state the basis of payment upon which their salaries are fixed?

Mr. HAYES FISHER

The returning officer at Parliamentary elections in England and Wales is the sheriff, or the mayor, or in a few cases the chairman of an urban district council, but his duties will for the most part be performed by an acting returning officer who will be the clerk to the county or borough or urban district council. The acting returning officer and his deputies, if any, will be remunerated in accordance with a scale to be framed by the Treasury in pursuance of Section 29 of the Representation of the People Act The appointment of deputies may be made at any time, and it is not practicable at present to furnish such a Return as is suggested.
