HC Deb 21 March 1918 vol 104 cc1189-90W
Mr. JACOBSEN

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food if his attention has been called to a circular, dated 1st March, issued to shopkeepers by the executive officer of the Islington Food Control Committee advising them to arrange to open their shops on Sundays if they are unable to supply all their customers on Saturday nights; if such official recognition of and incitement to Sunday trading has his sanction, and if he will ensure such steps being taken as will render any such course unnecessary?

Mr. CLYNES

The attention of the Food Controller has been drawn to the circular in question, which was issued by the committee with a view to overcoming some of the difficulties arising out of the initiation of the London and Home Counties Rationing Scheme. The Food Controller hopes that the improvements in meat distribution effected since the first week of the scheme will render the opening of shops on Sunday unnecessary in future.
